Moli’i Fishpond

This massive fishpond is 125 acres and ranges in depth from 4 to 30 feet. The land which contains the 600 – 960-year-old fishpond was purchased in 1850 by a man named Dr. Gerritt P. Judd. His descendants still own the property and manage it as Kualoa Ranch. It is one of the few fishponds that still exists in Hawaii and contains, moi (threadfish), ‘ama’ama (mullet) and awa (milkfish).

Kane’ohe Bay

Some have referred to this magnificent bay as a ‘living postcard,’ and after seeing it, you will understand why. The bay stretches from the Mokapu Peninsula all the way to Mokoli’i Island, also known as the Chinaman’s Hat. This 8-mile stretch of water contains five small islands and several sandbars. You may have also seen Kane’ohe Bay in movies and TV series such as Pearl Harbor, 50 First Dates, and Gilligan’s Island.

Hawaiian Aquaculture

The ancient Hawaiians had what some consider the perfect system for growing and producing a sustainable and reliable supply of food. While a full picture of ancient fish farming is unknown, enough has been passed down through word of mouth that the ancestors of the ancient Hawaiians and their supporters have been able to rebuild some of the fish ponds and share their knowledge with the world.

Description

The tour begins with a 20 minute tour of the Moli’i Fishpond which is one of the largest fishponds in Hawaii and serves as an enduring example of the ingenuity of the ancient Hawaiian people. Moli’i Fishpond is estimated to be between 600 and 960 years old. After spending some time exploring the pond and learning about the oyster farm and current stewardship practices it will be time to head to ‘Secret Island’ where you will board the catamaran that will take you around Kaneohe Bay. From the boat, prepare to enjoy stunning views of Mokoli'i Island, the valleys of Hakipuu and Kualoa as well as the Ko’olau mountain range. If you keep your eyes trained on the water you may even catch glimpses of tropical fish, sea turtles, and other wildlife.
