TASTE OF HANA PRIVATE TOUR
Take a ½ Day and See the First Part of the Road to Hana
View plenty of waterfalls, incredible rainforests, and ocean cliffs as you stop at various overlooks. Your local guide will “talk story” about the sights and history of this amazing drive. The Road to Hana is considered to be one of the most beautiful roads in America and there are so many spots to visit along the way — even though the drive only takes a few hours.
Driving the Road to Hana is one of the best things to do on Maui. The 51 miles of Hana Highway start in Kahului (where the airport is) and travel past the hippie surf town of Paia, through the rainforest, and into the town of Hana on Maui’s eastern coast. The road to Hana has over 600 hairpin turns, many of them blind corners, and many parts of the road are one lane only. This makes for an exciting drive on its own! Hana Highway winds through rainforests and along towering ocean cliffs and traverses more than 50 one-lane bridges. Along the way, there are plenty of places to stop and enjoy the scenery, swim in waterfalls, and plenty of photo ops. Driving the Road to Hana is an adventure you won’t soon forget!
After spending time in the vehicle, you might want a cool, refreshing dip in the waterfall pool. We’ll make a stop at a waterfall in Puaʻa Kaʻa State Park. Of all Hana waterfalls, Pua’a Ka’a tops many visitors’ lists. Located roughly 40 miles from Kahului—this ultra-green park features a pair of falls that, like the island itself, are nothing short of splendid. And if you’re so inclined, bring your swimsuit and towel because there’s nothing better enjoying the waterfall spray to cool you down. This is the best, and safest spot along the road to Hana to enjoy a swim in a rainforest setting!
The town of about 3,000 residents on Maui’s north shore — once best known for being the last stop on the way to the road to Hana — is now generally regarded as the hippest place on the Valley Isle. Pa’ia initially flourished in the late 1800s as the site of a bustling sugar cane operation. But the plantation’s days ebbed in the latter part of the 1900s. Then, in the 1970s Paia was “discovered” by the counterculture. The emergence and popularity of windsurfing began luring fans of the sport from around the globe, resulting in an exceptional level of diversity in the small and once-insular community. The result of these changes is a rather cosmopolitan village filled with eateries and specialty shops catering to both locals and visitors.

Like the idea of going to Hana but do not want an all day excursion? Then come with us on our Halfway to Hana tour. With four to five hours, you can still get into the thick of the rainforest, view a couple waterfalls and visit a native Hawaiian community. This route is recommended if you are limited on time.
The apex of this tour is our visit to the Keanae peninsula. We will drive down to this traditional Hawaiian village known for its taro fields which is tended to by mahi’ai (cultivators) in the same fashion as their Hawaiian ancestors. Visit an original stone missionary church built in 1856; the lone building to survive the devastating tsunami of 1946. End with a drive to Wailua, the village next door, featuring the best waterfall the road has to offer. A grand, three-tiered falls named Waikani. If you wish, we can take a short, adventurous trail to the base of the falls.
