ELITE VOLCANO HIKING TOUR
Explore Ancient Volcanoes & Eruption Sites
The Big Island is known for many things, the most famous of which is the ancient volcanoes that are still shaping and changing the island to this day. On the Hilo side of the island you will see some of the most beautiful jungle scenery surrounding the desolate landscape inside of Volcanoes National Park. This tour is designed to be a fun and interactive experience with frequent stops at well known overlooks and sites as well as some that are off the beaten path. Strap on your hiking boots and join us for one of the Big Island’s most exciting adventure tours.
The trail leading to the Halema’uma’u Crater is one of the oldest in the park, having been first established in 1846. The route in and around the crater changes frequently to cope with the active nature of the lava flows at Kilauea. Right now, since the lava lake was mostly emptied by the 2018 eruption, you will be able to hike down into the crater and fully appreciate the size and depth.
This state park is a quick stop on your way to Volcanoes National Park. This cave was created by a network of lava tubes that pulsed through the area during an eruption at Mauna Loa in 1881. Descending a metal ladder will lead you into a dark and mysterious cavern that is easy to traverse and explore. It should be noted that the further reaches of the cave cannot be entered as they go under private property.

Before entering Volcanoes National Park, your guide will first take you to the Kaumana Caves. These massive lava tubes once brought red hot magma within a mile of downtown Hilo in 1881, but today you can walk through the wide open caverns and marvel at their size and expansiveness. From there, you will enter Volcanoes National Park, which is one of Hawaii’s most popular and cherished attractions. In the grassy area you will enjoy a quick picnic lunch before heading into the park to embark on the three mile hike along the Halema’uma’u trail. This first hike will be the longest of the day, and it takes hikers from the Volcano House, down to the caldera floor using a series of winding switchbacks. The crater that you will be exploring during the hike has changed drastically since the eruptions in 2018 which saw the crater drained of lava completely. There will be plentiful photo opportunities to catch images of the still active lava flows in the Kilauea Caldera. The hike back to the Volcano House will take you through beautiful forest scenery, and there are multiple lookouts along the way from which you can see sweeping views of the caldera.
After taking a rest at the Volcano House, it will be time for your guide to take you to some other notable site inside the park. Exploring the Mauna Ulu lava flow is where you will get to see natural phenomenon like Pele’s Tears as well as lava trees. From there, your guide will take you through the rainforest to find the Nahuku lava tube, which is another cavernous lava tube in which you can walk. After a very full day of adventure, the last stop on the tour will be a restaurant in the famed small town of Volcano Village. Here, you can enjoy a delicious meal, and if the weather permits you will also be able to see lava glowing in the distance.
