Hawaiian Spinner Dolphins
Hawaiian spinner dolphins, also known as Stenella longirostris, are renowned for their spectacular acrobatic displays. They are one of the smallest of all marine dolphins, with an average length of approximately 5.5 feet and a weight of around 176 pounds. They are recognizable by their distinct black, grey and white coloring, as well as their long, slender snouts. These highly social creatures are frequently seen in groups of 20 to 30 individuals, although larger groups of up to 200 individuals have also been reported. Hawaiian spinner dolphins are known for their extraordinary leaping abilities, often spinning and somersaulting in the air up to several times before re-entering the water. They are primarily found in the warm, clear waters surrounding the Hawaiian Islands, where they feed on small schooling fish and squid. As a beloved and iconic species of Hawaiian marine wildlife, they are subject to strict conservation measures aimed at protecting their population from human interactions and environmental threats.
