MANTA RAY SNORKEL TOUR
An Unforgettable Evening Swimming with Manta Rays
Manta rays are some of the most graceful creatures in the ocean today. And on this tour you will be able to get up close and personal with these gentle giants. You may think that manta rays are not safe to swim with, but the opposite is true. While manta rays are cousins to stingrays, they actually have no barbs, teeth, or poison that could put guests in any danger. Manta rays may look intimidating because of their wingspan, which can sometimes exceed 15 ft. in width, but these ocean dwellers are gentle, friendly and primarily feed on plankton which are attracted by the bright lights onboard the vessel.
Of the abundant sea life in Hawaii, manta rays remain one of the most elegant creatures you can view while snorkeling or diving. Have an unforgettable encounter as you watch wild manta rays feed and play in the bright lights.
The benefit of embarking on a tour like this is having professional guides with extensive knowledge of manta rays to educate guests and answer questions. The guides on this tour will also ensure everyone has the snorkeling gear properly applied before joining you in the water to provide a safe and enjoyable experience.
While rays are the main focus of this tour, you will have the opportunity to catch a glimpse of the other nocturnal fish who call this part of Hawaii home. Brightly colored reef fish will also be attracted by the bright lights and abundant plankton in the water.

The tour begins with boarding the vessel close to sunset at Keauhou Bay. Departure time will vary depending on the season and when the sun will be setting. Manta rays are best viewed after dark because the post-sunset hours are their peak feeding time. After the vessel departs from Keauhou Bay guests will be taken to a popular snorkeling area 5-10 minutes down the coast nicknamed Manta Village. Bright lights are then placed in the water for two reasons, the first being that the light will attract plankton which is a manta ray’s chief food source, and the second is for visibility so guests will be able to view them from the surface with snorkel gear.
After the lights are in place and guests have applied their snorkel masks and accompanying gear they will be joined in the water by professional guides who will be there to assist. As the manta rays arrive to feed on the plankton, guests will have an unforgettable encounter with these beautiful creatures. Actual snorkel time in the water with the manta rays is approximately 45 minutes.
After re-boarding the vessel guests will be offered water, hot tea, hot chocolate, and a hot steaming cup of vegan soup. It can get chilly out on the open water after dark, but if you desire a cold beverage there will be a cash-only bar available on board with an assortment of beer, wine, soda, and juice. Return time to Keauhou Bay is expected to be 1.5 hours after departure, but keep in mind the tour may go longer depending on the manta ray’s feeding schedule.
